Little contest of sorts (though, contest would denote prize and I am poor, so maybe favor is a more appropriate title). I know how to make it a contest: the winner will get his or her name immortalized in the ramblings of an oft read (and by oft I mean my own eyes) blog. Immortalized I tell you.
What would you name my van? I am thinking Rattle and Hum - not due to some affinity for U2 rather these are the noises most often associated with my daily drives.

I thought it was "Westy"? well thats my vote and I know that's what most owners call them but it does have a certain flow to it.. Or how about "BB" for Bigger Bug.
what about the crotchety cruiser?
wait, i quite like blue-ribbon betsy...but im not sure if you're van is a girl or a boy...
Knowing Donaldson it's a girl, speaking of which who is the current girl? You always have someone on your mind.
granville
Check out Charley or Rocinante from John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley. If you want to stay with band names, how about Weezer? There's always Whine and Cheese, which might capture the paradox of the alleged classy connotation of the phrase when both words are spelled correctly juxtaposed with the annoying noise and an alternate meaning of the word cheese (shabby or cheap). Godzilla could work. The van's a monster in some ways, but it's also your vehicle on a spiritual journey (God) that may lead you to embrace your shadow (Zilla).
im thinking satellite (dmb) or amsterdam (coldplay)
How about Old West - or Ramblin' Rose - or HellBent or HeavenlyMade - or Gas'n'Go - or Lil' Burro (from Romancing the Stone) or Guzzler or Buzzard... or...?
I'd suggest using part of what you have with "Rattle and hum". Very descriptive, but not a very good "Name".
I'd call it, "The Humbug".
Though all of the ideas have merit (crotchety cruiser aside - cause that makes me feel old) and really like gas'n'go (though, with the faulty fuel pump it is more gas'n'pray), but think I will have to go with Ratchet from the original Transformers. Google it, you'll see. Just needs a slight paint job....
As for gender for inanimate vehicles. Yep, definitely a girl. Got to have someone take care of me.
someone take care of you? of you? hah. they couldn't if they tried... and i have.
well then you haven't tried hard enough because he is the easiest person to take care of. Give him food, a soft bed, and a soccer ball and he is golden. It's not that hard to figure out.
